Our local community
Queen Mary University of London is committed to enhancing the lives of the people of East London and beyond through our recruitment, teaching, research and public engagement activities.
A community with a shared past, present and future
Queen Mary’s roots in the community date back to the founding of the People’s Palace in 1887. This historic venue was unique in its community offering, providing a venue where people could enjoy dance classes, organ recitals, donkey shows and art exhibitions.
Fast-forward to the present day and we remain an anchor institution in East London. We are proud of our ongoing commitment to our local communities. This commitment is expressed in a number of ways — which you can learn more about on this page — from local partnerships to collaborative projects.
