Queen Mary alumni recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2021

We are thrilled to announce that eight Queen Mary alumni were recently named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. The honours acknowledge the outstanding achievements of people across the UK, and we are delighted that members of our alumni community stand among the 1,129 individuals who have been recognised.

  • Dr Martin Hudson (Medicine MBBS, 1965), Founder of Holmes Chapel Music Society in Cheshire, was awarded a BEM for services to music

  • Professor Sir Andrew Pollard (Medicine MBBS, 1989), Director of the Oxford Vaccine Group and Professor of Paediatric Infection and Immunity at the University of Oxford, received a knighthood for services to public health

  • Martin Griffiths (Medicine MBBS, 1991), National Clinical Director for Violence Reduction at NHS England, Consultant Vascular, Endovascular and Trauma Surgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust, and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, was awarded a CBE for services to healthcare

  • Margaret Busby (Honorary Fellow, 2011), publisher, editor, writer and broadcaster, was awarded a CBE for services to publishing

  • Jonathan Simpson (Politics BA, 1996), Labour Councillor at the London Borough of Camden and two times former Mayor, was awarded an MBE for services to local government in Camden, to charity and to culture in London

  • Adetokunbo Adesuyan, a former postgraduate Law student and Senior District Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service, was awarded an OBE for services to law and order

  • Shivarubeni Mahathevan (Computer Science and Mathematics BSc, 1998), Curriculum Manager and Tutor at Redbridge Institute of Adult Education, was awarded an MBE for services to education

  • Thomas Wells, a former medical student and Consultant Medical Oncologist at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust and Medical Tribunal Member at the UK Ministry of Justice, was awarded an MBE for services to medicine and people with disabilities in the medical profession
