Professor Colin Bailey CBE

Dear Graduate,

I hope this finds you well.

As 2023 draws to a close, I’d like to reflect on some of the highlights from the past 12 months and all that we, as a community, have achieved.

It was wonderful to meet some of you at our first Founders’ Day, a celebration of our University’s long and rich history. The values of our former institutions - St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, The London Hospital Medical College, Westfield College and Queen Mary College - live on through our vision, our people and our work. Our commitment to social justice and inclusion remains at the heart of all we do, and we continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion. As we look back at our founding institutions, it is certainly true that our past shapes us and our future inspires us.

Our excellence as a leading, research-intensive University is being brought to life by our new Research Highways. These combine expertise across our disciplines to tackle some of society’s biggest challenges and transform lives across the globe. For example, our researchers have recently made a significant breakthrough in the prevention of breast cancer which could benefit the thousands of women who are diagnosed with this awful disease each year. We have also performed strongly in the Government’s assessment of Knowledge Exchange for the second year running. This reflects our position as a leading University in sharing knowledge, ideas and experience to benefit both the economy and society, alongside our excellence in public engagement.

And you, our alumni, are such an important part of who we are today. Your achievements and the difference that you are making in your chosen fields across the world gives us all immense pride. On behalf of all of us at Queen Mary, I would like to express our gratitude for your contribution to your University and for inspiring our current and future students. Your support enables us to ensure that everyone who has the talent can flourish and succeed at Queen Mary, irrespective of their background, and through our research, we can address the challenges facing society today. Thank you.

Please do keep in touch so that we can continue to share your news and successes with the wider Queen Mary community as well as keeping you informed of the developments at your University.

My very best wishes to you and your families for the year ahead. I hope you all enjoy a restful festive season and I look forward to meeting many of you in 2024.

With kind regards,

Professor Colin Bailey CBE, FREng, BEng, PhD, CEng, FICE, FIStructE, MIFireE
