Dear Graduate,

On behalf of the Queen Mary community, I wanted to thank you as an alumnus of the University for all your support, and, of course, to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year as you enjoy this festive season.

Whether you are a recent alumnus of our university or perhaps an alumnus of one of our wonderful founding institutions, which were Westfield College, St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, The London Hospital Medical College or Queen Mary College, your support is critical to the future and success of our university.

It has been wonderful to hear all your stories and achievements during the year. We are very proud to see our graduates do so well in whatever career they choose. More importantly, your stories and achievements inspire the next generation of students. There is nothing more powerful than our students seeing the path that you have taken and the opportunities that are available to them by completing their education at Queen Mary.

By working together as one university, we have continued to go from strength to strength. Following an external review, the quality of our research was ranked seventh in the UK. We have also become the first university to obtain the Platinum Award for public engagement, and we were named ‘University of the Year’ at the UK Social Mobility Awards. With your help, we have maintained our excellence in research and education whilst ensuring that everyone who has the talent can flourish and succeed at our university.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for your generous financial support. Whether that is supporting our current students who are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, or your support for research projects that have a positive impact on society, or your support for our new buildings and facilities. Everything we do would not be possible without your help.

So, as another year comes to a close and we look forward with optimism towards 2023, I would like to wish you all happiness and good health for the year ahead and, hopefully, I look forward to meeting you all in person very soon.

With kind regards,

Professor Colin Bailey CBE, FREng, BEng, PhD, CEng, FICE, FIStructE, MIFireE
