Queen Mary alumni recognised in the New Year Honours List 2022

Ten members of the Queen Mary alumni community have been named in the New Year Honours List 2022. The honours mark the achievements and service of remarkable people in public life across the UK and we are delighted that our former students stand among the individuals who have been recognised.

  • Mr Ashley Banjo, a former Physics student, street dancer and choreographer, television presenter, judge and producer, was awarded an MBE for services to dance. Ashley leads the dance troupe Diversity, winners of the third series of Britain’s Got Talent.

  • Professor Simon David Gregory (Medicine MBBS, 1990), Deputy Medical Director for Primary and Integrated Care at Health Education England and a General Practitioner, was awarded an MBE for services to General Practice.

  • Mr Akthar Hussain (Electronic Engineering BEng, 2004), Senior Programme Engineer in the Southern Capital Delivery team at Network Rail, co-chair of Network Rail’s multi-faith employee network and champion of the Muslims in Rail group, was awarded a BEM for services to diversity and inclusion.

  • Professor Nick Lemoine (Medicine MBBS, 1983), Director of Barts Cancer Institute, at Queen Mary University of London, and National Medical Director of the Clinical Research Network, National Institute for Health Research, was awarded a CBE for services to clinical research, particularly during COVID-19.

  • Dr Ruth March (Immunology PhD, 1983), Genomic Scientist and Senior Vice President of Precision Medicine at AstraZeneca, was awarded an OBE for services to UK science and the COVID-19 response.

  • Professor Jonathan Michie (Economics MSc, 1980), Economist, Director of the Department for Continuing Education, President of Kellog College and Professor of Innovation & Knowledge Exchange at the University of Oxford, was awarded an OBE for services to education.

  • Mr Malcolm Press (Environmental Science BSc, 1980), Ecologist and Vice-Chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University, was awarded a CBE for services to higher and technical education.

  • Mr Paul Rees (Politics and History BA, 1992), Chief Executive of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, was awarded an MBE for services to mental health and to equality, diversity and inclusion.

  • Dr Amar Rughani (Medicine MBBS, 1981), a retired General Practitioner, former Royal College of General Practitioners examiner, author and Blueprinting Clinical Lead, was awarded an MBE for services to General Practice.

  • Professor Nick Webborn (Medicine MBBS, 1979; Sports Exercise MSc, 1996), a leading UK sports medicine specialist, Chair of the British Paralympic Association, and Clinical Professor in Sport and Exercise Medicine at Brighton University’s School of Sport and Health Science, was awarded a CBE for services to sport and sports medicine.
