The Queen Mary Emergency COVID-19 Fund aims to support students financially as well as emotionally during the global crisis. Shamima Akter, our elected President of Queen Mary Students’ Union 2020, shared why this Fund is crucial for our students during this very challenging time.
"I’m sure we all know how difficult university life can be for students!
"This year has been difficult in a different way for us all: mentally, emotionally, physically and financially. Students are having to navigate such an important phase in their life, whilst surviving a global pandemic. It’s been rather tough, especially for those students who have the responsibility of supporting themselves or their families financially, paying rent and having to rely on part-time work in order to live and survive. This pandemic has affected these students negatively, adding to the mountain of pressures that already exist.
"Setting up the Queen Mary Emergency COVID-19 Fund is an important step in acknowledging these hardships our students are facing, as well as practically looking for a solution to help alleviate their financial pressures, even if it is by giving a little. This is why it’s really important that we, as a Queen Mary community, come together to support our students and let them know that they are not alone.
"I want to thank everyone who has shown support, through donations and kind words of support, and engaged with Queen Mary. Your generosity is what the students need and I hope that through this Fund you are able to see the impact your gifts have on the lives of students. Thank you for being such a vital part of our community."
