Caroline is a medical student at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. She is the first in her family to study medicine. Caroline was awarded the Annual Fund Hardship Bursary thanks to the generosity of our alumni, to support her in her final year of study.

"I’m currently in the final year of my medical degree and I have thoroughly enjoyed studying medicine for the past five years! My degree has given me opportunities to learn new skills as well as teach younger students about my degree through medical education societies. During my time at university, I’ve been part of the Boat Club and I work as a receptionist at the Students’ Union gym. I like the diversity on campus and attending this university has allowed me to learn from and be friends with people from different backgrounds.
"My parents value education and have always been supportive of my studies, however, they are not in a position to support me financially with my student expenses. Because I live away from home, I work part-time to support myself. My final year of study has been much harder because I’ve not been able to work many hours as I want to spend as much time as possible focusing on my studies. I feel so happy to have received this award and I’m thankful to our alumni for their generosity. The funding has enabled me to pay for my rent and living expenses. I’m very relieved that I don’t have to constantly worry about my finances. I don’t have to work long hours to support myself and can fully apply myself for my final exams.
"I am grateful for the funding and I know that other students, like me, can benefit from alumni support. Finances are a huge concern for students especially for those who come from a low-income household or live away from home because studying and living in London is so expensive.
"My current focus is to finish my degree with good grades. Then, I want to hone my skills and work on becoming an orthopaedic surgeon. My award has already helped me on my journey to achieve my goals.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank our alumni for this funding. I am honoured and very grateful to be a recipient of your support. This funding has motivated me to do the best I possibly can in my final year and continue to participate in sports clubs and teach younger students. It is because of your generosity I can focus on my studies and continue pursuing my aspiration to become a surgeon."
