I’m so grateful to be awarded an Alumni-funded Scholarship. The funds have helped me survive this difficult time and enabled me to keep eating, pay rent and buy my study resources.
Henry Weaver, QMUL Annual Fund Scholarship recipient 2020-
"I went to university in my late teens but later dropped out because of my health issues. After that, I spent five years working full time. I always wanted to return to study but I didn’t think it would be possible because of the high student expenses. Now, at 26 I’m in my first year studying English with creative writing at Queen Mary, a subject I’m passionate about.
"I always wanted to live and study in London so I moved here in 2014. My transition back to university was a difficult one but the team at Queen Mary were great and helped with the process. Because of Covid, it’s been difficult for students to get the full university experience but we’re all adapting as best as we can. I’m really enjoying my course, learning literary theory has been particularly interesting. My course has given me confidence in my writing and I hope I can use these skills to be my own boss in the future.
"Before coming to university, I worked full time for five years. Unfortunately, because of Covid, I was furloughed and I wasn’t making enough money then I was eventually made redundant. I couldn’t find work and study at the same time so I took out a maintenance loan. It has been tough for me. I’m so grateful to be awarded an alumni-funded Scholarship. The funds have helped me survive this difficult time and enabled me to keep eating, pay rent and buy my study resources.
"Financial stress can be hard on many students. Some students do heavily rely on extra financial support to get by. My deepest sympathies are with students living in halls who have to pay rent and live away from their families during this uncertain time.
"After I graduate, I would like to study abroad in America. I hope to work on my writing and try different experiences.
"Thank you for your support! Your generosity has helped me in more ways than you imagine. I’m grateful for your sincere and kind gesture for students at Queen Mary."
