"My name’s Roy and I’m a third-year medical student. I’m a British born Chinese and an only child. I’m also the first in my family to study Medicine. I really enjoy music and I’m part of the orchestra at university as the main piano soloist!
"I always saw myself going into Medicine so I’m very fortunate to now be studying it. I’ve enjoyed doing clinical placements during my studies because I get the opportunity to talk to patients and work in a real hospital setting. My favourite placement so far has to be in the psychiatry because I heard so many unique and heart-warming stories from different patients.
"I chose to come to Barts and The London because I always wanted to study in London. I love the diversity on campus and East London. Because of this, I get to interact with patients of different ethnicity and backgrounds.
"Early last year when I found out I’d been awarded the Scholarship for Excellence, I was delighted! The fact that this award is alumni-funded made me feel very honoured to be the recipient. This special prize has helped me further my education and professional experience. I’ve used the funds to carry out research in Barts Cancer institution and this has also led me to do an internship in the summer as a research assistant.
"Finances are a worry for students. Many students have no option but to work part-time whilst studying to support themselves financially. I know it's been particularly hard for students because of the pandemic. Students rely on that extra support to get by and this is why alumni support is so important.
“I have another 3 years of studying before I graduate from Barts and The London; 2 clinical years and an intercalated year doing my postgraduate degree. After I graduate, I want to complete my foundation course as a junior doctor for two years. I hope to go on to specialise in a certain medical field in the future and work on honing my skills.
