Professor Andrew Prendergast to give Big Question Lecture: How can we help all children survive and thrive?
Why don't children always grow healthily during pregnancy? Can this affect them in later life? Professor Andrew Prendergast will be answering these questions and more in his free Big Question lecture.
In April 2023, Centre of the Cell and the Blizard Institute will welcome local young people to the Big Question Lecture, which will ask: How can we help all children survive and thrive?
Intending to answer the question is Professor Andrew Prendergast. His lecture will be followed by a Q&A and refreshments in the Blizard Institute reception.

Who: For ages 14+. Tickets for the lecture are free of charge, but booking is essential.
The Speaker
Andrew Prendergast is a Professor of Paediatric Infection and Immnuology at Queen Mary University of London. Professor Prendergast's research group focusses on the relationship between infection, immunity and malnutrition, particularly in parts of sub-Saharan Africa where HIV infection remains a major challenge. Consequently, he spends his time working between the Blizard Institute and Zimbabwe. Professor Prendergast's research group hopes to better understand the pathways involved in malnutrition, and ultimately, find ways to help all children survive and thrive. Much of his research can be found in scientific publications such as The Lancet Global Health and New England Journal of Medicine.
Professor Andrew Prendergast studied at both Cambridge University and Imperial College London, before undertaking his DPhil (Oxford University's PhD equivalent), with a focus on HIV infection in children. He then continued his research at the MRC Clinical Trials Unit at UCL, before joining Queen Mary University of London.
Professor Prendergast continues to work in a wide range of teaching positions ranging from undergraduate teaching though to PhD level supervision.

They give audiences from age 14 the chance to hear from leaders in science and healthcare about the cutting-edge biology and innovative front-line medicine going on right here in east London.
The Big Question Lecture is our opportunity to open the doors of Centre of the Cell and the Blizard Institute to the general public and share our innovation and expertise in this field with east London’s next generation of young scientists.
