Dr Mohsin Butt, MBBS BSc(Hons)

Profile

Mohsin graduated from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry with triple distinctions, Weitzmann Prize in Cardiology and Strauss Prize before completing basic medical training at the Royal Free Hospital, London. He was appointed Clinical Research Fellow at the Wingate Institute of Neurogastroenterology and Royal London Hospital before being awarded an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre, University of Nottingham.

He began his research career at the Blizard Institute where he explored the association between hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and gastrointestinal disorders. More recently he has developed an interest in the brain-gut-liver axis and is collaborating with the Liver Failure Group at University College London with whom he is exploring the role of device-based treatments, such as vagus nerve stimulation, in the management of chronic liver disease.

His clinical interests are centred around gastroenterology, hepatology, and medically unexplained problems, such as chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

• Mechanisms of visceral pain in health and disease
• Hereditary disorders of connective tissue e.g., Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and gastrointestinal symptoms
• Device-based treatments for chronic liver disease, such as vagus nerve stimulation
• Understanding the aetiology of acute-on-chronic liver failure
