Beta-mercaptoethanol smell from LG23/24 BE CAREFUL

This email is to advise lab users of two things.

Published:

1.    Please be aware that there is currently a very strong smell of Beta-mercaptoethanol present within LG23/24 enclosed lab space. Please be careful when entering the room and do not enter if you have specific health conditions that could be exacerbated by the chemical.

2.    When using chemicals such as Beta-mercaptoethanol, these MUST be used only inside of a fume hood with the sash pulled down to an appropriate level. The lid must never be left off and should only be removed to collect a small volume of the chemical for use. The lid should be immediately replaced on the container.

If there is anyone within the Blizard who could advise why there is such a strong smell of this chemical in this room then please do come forward. We are aware accidents can happen, but we much prefer to be ahead of the situation as opposed to chasing answers. Individuals can always contact lab management with any questions they have. We are here for the safety of all lab users.
