For those of us who are accustomed to living with discrimination, microaggressions and bias there were few surprises or grand epiphanies, but 2022 was notable as the beginning of worldwide recognition and acknowledgement of equity, diversity and inclusivity in healthcare and education. Strategies within medical education have been varied but include new policies to guide selection for diversity, and awareness campaigns - a very popular awareness campaign focused on implicit bias. But what principles are guiding these efforts? Have we considered the dangers of raising awareness of implicit bias without clear guidelines for positive change and action?
This one-day event will engage participants in inquiry and discussion around rethinking our current approach to healthcare and education, with an emphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion. Following a presentation by Dr. Monteiro, participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussion and activities to “play” and think differently about the current approaches to this topic.
