Disposing of Bio-Hazard Waste

This is a reminder to everyone working with any bio-hazards that you must not overfill the clear autoclave bags or overfill the red biohazard boxes.

Published:

SOP LM016a - ‘Clear autoclave bags must be no more than 50% full and secured with a rubber band... Place the bag upright in the red crate; do not stack bags on top of each other. Red crates should not be overfilled; ask Laboratory Management for more crates if required.’

When bags are overfilled in this manner they cannot fit into the autoclave boxes in the washroom. This means they will not be collected by the washroom technician.

When filling these bags specifically with a large number of agar plates, please double bag and try to place excess blue roll in the base of the bags as well if possible. Our washroom technician should not have to clean the autoclave boxes of agar due to it leaking out of the bags during autoclaving because they were not double bagged.

To the person who left the overfilled bag in LG116, please remove it and place the contents into two bags so it can be collected by our technician and autoclaved.
