Education Excellence Awards and President and Principal's Prizes

These Awards and Prizes aim to enhance the quality of education and embed a culture of excellence at Queen Mary. This is achieved through the recognition and celebration of: teaching excellence; student engagement through co-creation; support for excellent student learning outcomes; and delivery of an excellent student environment and experience.

See details of the Awards presented in the 2022/23 academic year.

The scheme also underlines the importance of education at Queen Mary, alongside research and public engagement. It also complements the existing Education Awards which are organised by the Students’ Union and in which nominations are made and voted for by students.

Criteria

Applications are welcomed from staff, both academic and Professional Services, and students. All those involved in teaching on Queen Mary programmes and/or in providing support to students at Queen Mary are eligible to apply. Applications can either be for an individual or a team.

In the case of team nominations, preference will be given to those which demonstrate how academic and Professional Services staff have worked together and/or how the team has successfully worked across School/Institute, Faculty or Directorate boundaries.

In all cases, the primary criterion for recognition is demonstrable and impactful excellence in education, assessment and feedback, student support and/or the student experience at an institutional level. This could be demonstrated in one or more of the following ways:

  • Innovation in education, assessment and feedback, student support, or the student experience
  • Successful delivery of change which leads to excellence in the areas of education, assessment and feedback, student support or the student experience
  • Practice which advances the individual/team’s and the University’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Significant contributions to the delivery of the 2030 Strategy / Education Enabling Plan
  • Significant, or national/international leadership in education

This contribution should be aligned to the University’s Active Curriculum for Excellence (ACE) Approach, and one or more of the Pillars of Excellence (i.e. Excellence in Education; Student Engagement; Student Employability; and the Learning Environment). Nominations should set out which of these pillars the application relates to. They should also demonstrate effective engagement with students in designing, implementing or co-creating impactful approaches and solutions.

To be eligible for an individual Education Excellence Award or President and Principal’s Prize, staff nominees are required to hold a Fellowship from Advance HE i.e. Associate Fellowship (AFHEA), Fellowship (FHEA), Senior Fellowship (SFHEA) or Principal Fellowship (PFHEA). Alternatively, the nominee may be in the process of working towards such recognition. This can be interpreted broadly, and is intended to cover situations such as ongoing participation in a taught programme which leads to Advance HE recognition (CILT or PGCAP), attendance or planned attendance at a workshop, or being in the process of drafting an application.

For team nominations, the majority of staff members of the team should hold or be working towards an Advance HE Fellowship.

Each year, a small number of Education Excellence Awards applicants will be awarded a President and Principal’s Prize. These will have shown an outstanding contribution and made a significant difference, with potential for transferability and wider impact.
