Environment & Health MDT: Pump Priming Funding - Open Call Launch

Pump Priming Funding Opportunity - Open Call

Published:

The Environment & Health Multi-Disciplinary Research Theme (MDT) was established in Autumn 2021 as a cross-cutting theme across Queen Mary to collaborate on a number of research areas under Environment & Health. The theme is led by Professor Andrew Prendergast, Professor Jonathan Grigg and Dr Stavroula Kanoni, supported by Research Project Manager Pauline Whitelaw.

So far, the theme has:

  •     Successfully established a network of over 150 research and industry colleagues,
  •     Established a monthly seminar series covering a broad range of topics,
  •     Held a sandpit event establishing key areas of research in the field under the headings of the breathed environment, enhancing the built environment, and urbanisation of the microbiome,
  •     Established a quarterly newsletter outlining key events and research opportunities in the field.

Further information about our theme can be viewed on our web-hub

Pump Priming - Open Call

To support the development of the theme, we have been allocated funding for pump priming activities, and ran an initial funding round in Autumn 2022.

Funding was successfully received by Dr James Scales (Wolfson Institute) and team to focus on the question "Can wrist worn activity monitors provide valuable and reliable estimates of breathing rate to support personal air pollution exposure estimates".

We have now re-opened our funding call and are offering the opportunity to apply for funding between £250 and £5000 to support research activities that align to the Environment & Health theme, and which promote interdisciplinary research. We particularly welcome applications from early career researchers.

We are accepting applications on an ongoing basis until 31 March 2023. Applications will be reviewed and assessed by a panel upon receipt - we recommend that you apply as soon as possible as there is a limited pot of funding available.

Eligibility

Applications must include representation from at least two FMD institutes or one FMD institute and one other QMUL Faculty, and must be multidisciplinary to support MDT development. Please note that FMD funds are to support FMD activity only.

The following are eligible for funding:

Bid writing workshops to support, finalise and submit multidisciplinary research bids of ≥ £200K with QMUL and national and/or international collaborators,

  •     To obtain pilot data to support research grant applications ≥ £200K for external future funding,
  •     Develop proof of concepts and begin successful research projects e.g., cross-faculty to support future establishment of QM URI,
  •     To develop effective industry partnerships with funding links e.g., sponsorships,
  •     To obtain data to support quality research paper submissions and publications e.g., response to reviewers’ comments, novel paper.

The following are not eligible for funding:

  •     Staff costs (funds are for consumables only),
  •     Independent (non-QM) website development.
