As part of the Core Network Project we are introducing a new Security box at Whitechapel. This box provides intrusion detection and monitors traffic on our network and analyses that traffic for signatures matching known attacks, and when something suspicious happens we are alerted it also provides Intrusion Protection which is primarily a preventive device designed not only to detect but also to block malicious actions.
We have now installed the device and it needs to be tested it before bringing it into service so we have the following schedule:
07:00 – We switch to the new box for testing – disruptive Change
07:05 – Testing of core services
08:00 - We move back to our original configuration – disruptive Change
This is a 3 minute disruption during which time there will be no Internet connectivity.
07:00 – We switch to the new box - disruptive Change
08:00 - Assuming all is well we leave the second box in place
This is a 3-minute disruption during which time there will be no Internet connectivity.
Please kindly cascade this update in your departments, and please let its-frms@qmul.ac.uk and its-corenetworkproject@qmul.ac.uk if you have any questions.
Please note that this change is over and above the 1 September network change which we have communicated separately.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused and looking forward to receiving your feedback on impact analysis in your departments. We have not given a timeline for impact assessment, as this is minimal disruption.
