Faculty of Medicine receives Gold Athena Swan Award

We are delighted to announce that Medicine has been awarded an Athena Swan Gold Award, recognising our outstanding progression and achievements in promoting gender equality.

To put this in context, 1,010 departments, faculties and universities across the UK currently hold Athena Swan Awards – of which only 27 are Gold. We join only six other faculties in the UK to receive a Gold Award. The Institute of Dentistry, which currently holds an Athena Swan Silver Award, will submit a separate application in November 2024.

Receiving the Gold Award means we have been able to demonstrate ‘highly significant’ progress over a five-year assessment period, as determined by an independent panel of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) experts. The process of assessment is very rigorous and is based on demonstration of longitudinal metrics, as well as on evidence that we have fulfilled the actions in our 2017 action plan.
