Impact of the State Funeral on Faculty activity and Welcome Week

As many of you will be aware, the day of the State Funeral (Monday 19th September 2022) will be a bank holiday, which our University will observe to pay our respects to our Patron, Queen Elizabeth II.

Published:

Monday is also the first day of Welcome Week and it is very important that we look after our new students. We need to ensure they have the opportunity to pay tribute to the late Queen and watch the State Funeral, and also that they have a warm welcome to our University.

For our Faculty, this means normal University business will be suspended for Monday 19th September and Institutes will be expected to work as per their normal Bank Holiday procedures regarding any key laboratory maintenance etc. Your line manager will let you know if you are required to work on 19th September in advance and all staff who are required to work will receive enhanced pay, if they typically receive enhanced pay for working on a bank holiday, and a day in lieu.

The following facilities will be available on our campuses for staff and students:

  • The State Funeral will be televised on the Mile End, Whitechapel and Charterhouse Square campuses, for any staff or students present on/living near our campuses who wish to watch it. Further details can be found here. No booking is required
  • Libraries on all campuses will remain open
  • The Curve Restaurant & Zero Waste Shop will be open at Mile End, and the Nucleus Cafe will be open at Whitechapel
  • The Qmotion Sport & Fitness Centre, Ground Café, Village Shop and Drapers Bar & Kitchen will be open at Mile End, and The Griff Inn will be open at Whitechapel

Some activities planned for new students on Monday will be postponed, including most subject-specific induction sessions. We will also postpone students picking up their ID cards, which will commence on Tuesday 20 September in the Octagon. There are activities available for students on our campuses on Monday 19th: for more details, please see here. Our residences team is also running activities for students in halls, and will be communicating with students in halls separately.

We realise some new students may prefer not to come onto campus on the day of the State Funeral. There is no need for new students to come onto campuses on Monday if they prefer not to.

If you have any questions, please speak to your line manager in the first instance.
