You are invited to join Queen Mary University of London and Embassy of Hungary in London at a celebratory event commemorating the 204th anniversary of the birth of Dr Ignác Semmelweis, a 19th century Hungarian obstetrician who recognised that handwashing before examining mothers in labour can prevent childbed fever. He pioneered antiseptic procedures which lead to the subsequent significant reduction of mortality at obstetric wards.

During the celebrations we will hear briefly hear about the physician's life and work, and hear a reading by an Academy Award winning actor Sir Mark Rylance from his recent play 'Dr Semmelweis'. At the event, representatives from the University and the Embassy will unveil the first Semmelweis statute in the UK.

This event is co-organised by Queen Mary University of London and The The Embassy of Hungary in London
