  • We hope you are settling into your new role as Principal Laboratory Manager. What are you first impressions of the Institute now you are with us?

Everyone has been very friendly, welcoming and helpful, which has been appreciated.

  • Tell us more about your background and how you got to where you are today.

I was born and raised in NZ. I did a BSc (Biochemistry and Microbiology) and MSc (Molecular Biology) in Christchurch, NZ, and then came over to the UK, where I got a temp job working for GlaxoWelcome (now GSK) at the Beckenham site in Kent. This led to a job at Cancer Research UK (although it was ICRF when I started) based at Hammersmith Hospital, where I was a Scientific Officer, before becoming promoted to a Senior Scientific Officer (7 years). We moved to Charterhouse Square and just as everyone was being changed onto QMUL contracts, I left to start a lab manager job at the Institute of Ophthalmology at UCL (15 years). And now I am officially working for QMUL at the Blizard Building as Principal Laboratory Manager.

  • What are you passionate about?

Coming from NZ I love sport, especially the All Blacks (rugby) and the Black Caps (cricket)! I also love going to a musical!

  • Tell us something we don't know about you!

Despite being born and raised in NZ, both my parents are English, and all my relatives live in England, so I have more family over here than I do in NZ!
