National Student Survey and Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey

The Blizard Institute recently received feedback from the two most important surveys for undergraduate and postgraduate education, the National Student Survey and Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey. We would like to take this opportunity to share a few highlights with you.

Published:

The 2022 National Student Survey (NSS)

There was 73% overall student satisfaction at the university level (QMUL) and at the subject specific level.  The BSc Biomedical Science and BSc Neuroscience both achieved 72%, with 80% for the 5-year MBBS, and 78% for Dentistry. We acknowledge there are improvements that can be made across many areas of the student experience, and shortly you will see advertised faculty level initiatives to improve the NSS scores across our different programmes.

Below are three examples of student feedback from the NSS 2022 that highlight the importance of our undergraduate teaching in the Blizard Institute.

  1. “The overall intellectual stimulating part of the course is due to great work of lecturers at Blizard Institute that who have provided course content”
  2. “The research project experience in final year was such a great opportunity for me to develop my lab skills and become acquainted with a laboratory environment”
  3. “Queen Mary University is very inclusive; you can really feel like a part of this great community. The lecturers are knowledgeable and experienced. I loved my time there”

Thank you once again for supporting of undergraduate teaching and we hope that together we can continue to work collectively to deliver high quality research-led education in the Blizard Institute.

The 2022 Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES)

We are delighted that 86% of Blizard post-graduate taught students agreed with the statement ‘Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of the course’, representing a 7% increase from last year and exceeding this year’s average results for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Queen Mary, and Russell Group. The survey identified multiple areas of strength including ‘Staff are good at explaining things’ (95% agreement), ‘The course is intellectually stimulating’ (97%), and ‘Staff are enthusiastic about what they are teaching’ (96%).  More detailed analysis reveals potential areas for improvement, which will be shared with individual programme teams, but it is important to acknowledge and celebrate the Blizard Institute’s outstanding overall results!

We are extremely proud that for a lot of the categories we have improved significantly and scored better than our faculty, Queen Mary, Russell group and sector. We know that this is due to our hard work and dedication. Thanks therefore to everyone for your consistent commitment to delivering an excellent student experience.

Best wishes,

Blizard Education Committee (Jo, Natalie, Kristin, Jurgen & Joanna)
