Dear MBBS students and Staff,
In the summer after the first MBBS examination sittings we had 400 plus students who were not able to progress to their next year or graduate. In combination the IHSE staff, BLSA, our Appeals Team and senior leadership set about providing remedial support alongside the hard work of our students. This has been a huge team effort
After resits and following careful deliberation by the Exam Boards and my senior leadership some students will be offered a repeat year so please welcome them to their new year when they join. They have not had any break and this has been a very stressful period so we need to support them as fellow students and staff on the same BL Team.
Very sadly, today we will be deregistering some MBBS students after extremely thorough evaluation of their case and their progress on the course. There may still be routes to appeal so please look at these.
Letters are being sent to student email addresses today confirming the outcome and our Student Support Team are standing by to offer support and advice to those who need it.
I thank all our staff and students for the hard work and really good team work here. As I reflect on this, there are multiple factors that led to the position in the summer but I want to stress to all our students that if you get into difficulty with the course, health or hardship please ask for help as soon as possible – do not wait. To address this we have further measures being planned to support progression next year but it is clear we must redouble our efforts as staff and students to ensure we prepare and graduate as many doctors as possible.
That will be most likely to be successful if we continue our team work where staff and students working together co-own, co-create and co-solve challenges along the way just as you will do in your future careers as doctors.
My deepest thanks to all of you in MBBS (Staff and Students) who worked so hard to help here.
