Council

Council is the governing body of Queen Mary University of London. Members listen to, discuss, and constructively challenge the Senior Executive in relation to the 2030 Strategy, the way we use public funds, how we manage our finances, and how we comply with our statutory obligations.

The membership of Council comprises five elected Queen Mary staff members and individuals external to the University who have been recruited to bring expertise, knowledge and experience from other sectors to support the university in delivering its mission and achieving its strategy.  All members have a responsibility to act in the best interests of Queen Mary and do not act as representatives of a particular staff group, school, institute, or department.

Time Commitment

Council meets at least five times per year from 4:00-7:00pm and hosts an off-site annual conference with the Senior Executive Team. Meeting dates can be found here. Members are expected to attend meetings and the annual conference in person. Additional online meetings and informational briefings are organised as required.

All members are expected to undertake an induction and training programme led by the Council Secretariat.

The role is not remunerated but members can claim expenses, including for family caring responsibilities, depending on members’ individual circumstances.

Self-nomination and election process

Staff are invited to self-nominate using the online form through this link https://forms.office.com/e/ZPvnWuqZeL.

Candidates will be required to complete an election statement referencing the Council’s Statement of Primary Responsibilities to be published on the website. Candidates will also be asked to complete the UK government’s Fit and Proper Persons Test and an equality monitoring form.

Candidates will be invited to have an informal conversation with a current member of Council to discuss the role and how their election statement might be enhanced.

Please read the following documents before completing the self-nomination form:

The deadline for submitting completed self-nomination is 5pm on Monday 03 July.

If more than one nomination is received for each vacancy, elections will be held from Monday 17 July – Monday 31 July.

If you would like to discuss the role or have any questions, please contact Dr Nadine Lewycky, Head of Secretariat, at n.lewycky@qmul.ac.uk.
