Staff Survey 2022: Blizard Institute results

Professor Mary Collins and Dr Natalie McCloskey write to all Blizard Institute staff to share the results for the Blizard Institute and to explain our next steps.

Published:

Dear colleagues,

I hope you have had the chance to read the latest all-staff communication regarding the staff survey.

The survey was completed by 64% of staff in the Blizard. This gives us a strong platform on which to develop our action plans, although I would like to work with you all to improve the participation rate in future surveys so that everyone has had their voice heard.

Further to the message from the Vice-Principal (Health), I am pleased to see that the overall Queen Mary results show a positive score around diversity, flexibility, wellbeing.

There are some real positives to draw from the Blizard Institute results too (see summary report below). I am pleased to see that the Institute scored highly in “I know what I need to do to be successful in my role”, “I am able to arrange time out from work when I need to” and agreed strongly that “Queen Mary values diversity”.

There are also some themes that have scored less well and that are areas we will be focusing on as we develop our action plans. These include:

  • “I am confident that appropriate action would be taken in my department, based on a report of bullying and/or harassment”
  • “My manager keeps me informed about what is happening at Queen Mary”

The comparison bars on the right-hand side of the reports show how the Blizard Institute compares with Queen Mary as a whole. Our actions in response to the survey will first be focused on where we have performed comparatively less well.
The ‘Focus’ column indicates where Queen Mary has suggested we direct our focus, so we will also be considering these points closely in our action plans.

The next steps will be for the results to be discussed initially with the Leadership team and further information will follow around the timeline and approach to action planning. There will be further communication also about how you can engage in this work and I would encourage you to do so.

This survey gives us important information and by working together we can deliver actions that will improve everyone’s experience in our Institute.

Kind regards,

Professor Mary Collins

and

Dr Natalie McCloskey
