Strike Action

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to ascertain whether you took any Strike Action or Action Short of a Strike (ASOS) on any of the following dates:

Published:
  • ASOS from 23rd November 2022 (ongoing)
  • Strike Action 24th, 25th and 30th November 2022

If you took ASOS, please confirm the nature of the action taken:

The forms of ASOS are:

  • Working to contract.
  • Not undertaking any voluntary activities.
  • Not covering for absent colleagues.
  • Not rescheduling lectures or classes cancelled due to strike action.
  • Removing uploaded materials related to, and/or not sharing materials related to, lectures or classes that will be or have been cancelled as a result of strike action.

This information is required to meet the requirement to log official strike action and action short of a strike and ensure correct amendments to pay for those who took action on any/all of these dates.

Pay deductions are based on 1/365th of annual salary for each day of strike action or action short of a strike. Where staff work different hours on different days, deductions will be made on the basis of the hours that would have been worked on the day/days action was taken. Please note that if planned educational activity was not delivered because of strike action or action short of a strike, pay will be deducted based on the number of days until that educational activity was rescheduled within the timescale agreed by me or my delegate.

Can you please respond to this message no later than 10am on 1 December 2022 to advise me if you took action and if so, on which of the above days, if you took action short of a strike, please also confirm the dates and nature of this action.

I am required to pass on the information of those who took action to Queen Mary’s Payroll and Pensions Manager.  Any pay adjustments will be made in the next available pay run.

As a reminder, on any days where pay is deducted, you will not have paid your pension contribution for that day and Queen Mary will not pay the employer contribution.  You might wish to consider replacing the lost contribution. It is possible to pay a sum equal to the employee and employer contribution and receive full credit for the day’s absence and continue to have full cover. Any member of staff wishing to do this must inform Queen Mary in writing before the absence takes place. Please contact pension@qmul.ac.uk

Best wishes
Rachael
