Unsafe sharps use on Microtome

Dear lab users,

On a walk around this evening at 5pm, it was noticed that the microtome in LG23 had been left unattended with the blade left in an unsafe position. (See attached photo).

This is an unsafe practice and should never occur and has been reported as a near miss event to Health and Safety.

If you are using the microtomes or cryostats and have to leave the machine for any length of time then you must remove the blade from the machine and place it securely and safely into either a sharps bin (if you no longer need to use the blade) or a container (such as a 15/50ml falcon tube) where the blade can be safely contained for future use. The blade must never be left in the machine itself.

We would be grateful if the person who was using the machine could contact lab management and let us know who they are. On this occasion no further action will be taken.
