Dear colleagues,
We are writing to share with you the results of the latest assessment of quality of education in universities in England. Known as TEF (the Teaching Excellence Framework), this assessment is run by the Office for Students (OfS) and each university is awarded one of four categories: Gold, Silver, Bronze and ‘requires improvement’.
In our last TEF exercise in 2017 we were awarded Silver and we have maintained Silver this time round.
Within the overall rating, the TEF panel assesses two categories - student experience and student outcomes - and considers a range of information sources for each of them. This time round, we received a Bronze for student experience and Silver for student outcomes. One source of information for student experience is the National Student Survey (NSS). As you know, our NSS results are not where they should be. Improving our students’ experience and seeing that reflected in our NSS results is an important and urgent area of focus for all of us.
As part of the TEF evaluation process, universities and student bodies can submit a narrative for the panel to consider alongside the data. The narratives we submitted helped to demonstrate to the panel how we deliver our commitment to both social mobility and academic excellence, which marks us out from our Russell Group peers. Please do take a moment to read our narrative [PDF]. The Students’ Union also submitted a narrative [PDF].
We are committed to providing an outstanding, inclusive, world-class education and student experience, co-created with our diverse student body, enhanced by our world-leading research and latest technological developments. We set out that commitment in our Strategy 2030, and the way in which we plan to achieve this is articulated in our Active Curriculum for Excellence (ACE).
