Title: 'Studies of the human enteric nervous system in isolated surgical specimens' Biography:
Simon Brookes received his PhD from Bristol University (UK) for studies on the nervous system of insects. He carried out four years of post-doctoral research on the enteric nervous system at the Royal London Hospital, then moved to Flinders University, South Australia. He was awarded a Senior Research Fellowship from the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and, later, a Scenior Research Fellowship of the NHMRC. He moved into an academic position as Head of Department of Human Physiology in 2005. He runs a small research group, currently funded largely by NIH SPARC grants, focussing on how nerve cells are organised in simple circuits in the human gastrointestinal tract. He has over 200 publications, 6,000-10,000 citations (depending on which database you choose) and has been an investigator on 30 category 1 research grants over his career. He works in close collaboration with like-minded gut researchers at Flinders University including Marcello Costa, Nick Spencer, David Wattchow, Phil Dinning, Vladimir Zagorodnyuk, Lukzasz Wiklendt and Taher Omari.
