World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD):

Tuesday 21 March 2023

Nizetic Lab

Published:

This event happens on 21/3 every year to represent 3 x chromosome 21.

Down Syndrome is named after John Langdon Down, who was a distinguished student at the London Hospital Medical College (now Garrod Building) and first described it in a paper in the Royal London Hospital Reports (London Hospital Reports, 3: 1866, 259-262).

Each year on WDSD there is an awareness campaign, called #LotsOfSocks, which encourages people to wear silly/bright/odd socks as a way of a conversation starter to get people talking about Down Syndrome.

The theme for WDSD in 2023 is “With Us Not For Us”, to highlight that “A human rights-based approach views people with disabilities as having the right to be treated fairly and have the same opportunities as everyone else, working With others to improve their lives.

As a lab, our work focuses on understanding the cellular effects and impact on certain diseases that occur as a result of trisomy 21. Aoife and Ana will be rocking their crazy socks and invite you to join in too! We’ll have a prize for the best socks on the day.
