The Queen’s Knights – a team of students from the School of Business and Management – are taking part in the Million Makers Challenge with the aim of raising money for vulnerable young people in the UK. This entrepreneurial challenge is organised and represented by The Prince’s Trust.
Million Makers is an innovative entrepreneurial challenge which sees teams of employees, from organisations across the UK, competing to raise as much as possible from an initial seed funding investment. The challenge collectively raises over £1 million every year to change the lives of young people across the UK.
The Queen's Knights' fundraising initiative ideas have gone through a Dragon’s Den style pitch in order to become an approved team. The goal is to raise at least £10,000 by the 31st of January 2021.
The team is the only student group, competing against some of the biggest companies in the UK (including Atos, Natwest and Tata Steel). They have also elected to operate on a £0 budget to demonstrate what student entrepreneurship can achieve.
One of the intitiatives the team are hosting is the ‘555 Challenge’. Participants must simply run, walk or cycle 5k, donate £5 and nominate 5 others to participate. As participants are likely to be scattered all over the globe, the team is also encouraging participants to include photos of their local scenery whilst completing the challenge to showcase the beauty of diversity at Queen Mary.
To meet their projected donation target, the Queen’s Knights are looking to collectively run the same distance as going around the world’s equator: 40,075 km or 24,901 mi. At least 2000 participants would be needed to raise the minimum £10,000.
The chairperson of the Queen’s Knights, Veerna Singh Rawal, said: “The Prince’s Trust will help young people to start to work on building a better future, by helping them do what they believe they are made to do. They will help them gain experience, start businesses, and get into jobs”.
