Shazia Afghan photoI studied for the LLM in Banking and Finance Law at Queen Mary University, CCLS in 2014-2015. Prior to studying for the LLM I had worked for several years as in house litigation counsel at Lloyds Banking Group. Following the global financial crisis of 2008, I worked predominantly on financial disputes and contentious regulatory investigations, including financial misselling and LIBOR manipulation claims. I decided to study for an LLM in Banking and Finance Law as I had wanted a deeper understanding of UK financial law and regulation. I chose the following modules: Banking Law; Securities Regulation; and Ethics in Banking and Finance, and wrote my dissertation on contentious regulatory investigations.

The LLM in Banking and Finance Law has provided a solid foundation for my various accomplishments since graduating from Queen Mary University in 2015. For example, I have published a number of academic papers in the Journal of International Banking Law & Regulation on financial disputes and contentious regulatory investigations. I have also provided academic legal counsel to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Fair Business Banking, and contributed to the publication of their report “Fair Business Banking for All – How to improve access to justice for business in financial services disputes” (July 2018). I am also currently working for Treasury Legal Advisers at the Treasury which involves advising the government on financial law and legislation. Finally, completing the LLM in Banking and Finance at CCLS has inspired me to continue my academic studies. I am currently studying for a PhD in Fintech Law, Ethics and Regulation at Queen Mary University, CCLS which I hope to complete in 2022.
