Emilia Onyema (Laws PhD, 2007)
On 9th May Professor Onyema acted as a moderator at London International Dispute Week 2022. She moderated the discussion on the topic of “Sub-Saharan Africa Disputes” as part of LIDW. The panel explored how London could improve its attractiveness and diversity in arbitration proceedings involving African treaties / parties. HKA, Morrison Foerster, One Essex Street, SOAS University of London, Stephenson Harwood and Stewarts and White and Case joined together for the insightful and interesting discussion.
For nearly 15 years now Professor Emilia Onyema has been teaching at the School of Oriental and African studies (SOAS) University of London. Emilia, together with Stuart Dutson and Kamal Shah, is the founder of the An African Promise initiative. This is what Professor Onyema says about it on the website: ‘As a group of counsel, arbitrators, representatives of corporates, States, arbitral institutions, academics and others involved in the practice of international arbitration, we are committed to improving the profile and representation of African arbitrators especially in arbitrations connected to Africa. In particular, we consider that African arbitrators should be appointed as arbitrators on an equal opportunity basis’.
