7th AFSIA Annual Conference

Make International Arbitration Efficient Again.

On Friday 16 June, the Alumni and Friends of the School of International Arbitration (AFSIA) gathered for their 7th Annual Alumni Conference on the topic “Make International Arbitration Efficient Again” at the IDRC, with the generous support of Three Crowns LLP.

After some opening words by AFSIA President Maarten Draye (Partner at Hanotiau & Vanderberg and CCLS alumnus in Internatiponal Business Law LLM, 2006), Stavros Brekoulakis (CCLS Professor of International Arbitration and Commercial Law) explored the past, present and future of third party funding in his opening speech. During a lively first panel, Carlos Carvalho (Senior Business Development Consultant at Opus 2, London and CCLS alumnus in Comparative and International Dispute Resolution LLM, 2017) explored  the question “What is slowing down the arbitration process with panelists Manish Aggarwal (Three Crowns, London), Angélica André (White & Case, Paris) and Irene Mira. After the coffee break, the second panel continued on the same path. Moderator Greg Falkof (Mishcon de Reya London) navigated the timeline of the arbitration proceedings to identify a number of possible “Procedural and Case Management Innovations” with the help of Galo Martín Marques (Creel, Mexico), Vee Vian Thien (Three Crowns, London), Caroline Croft (Enyo, London) and Rutger Metsch (HSF, London). Dr. Gloria M Alvarez (Commercial Law PhD, 2017) shared her final thoughts to wrap up the discussions, which were followed by a networking cocktail.
