Beyza (Criminal Justice LLM, 2022) talks about her new internship placement at International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute in London: “After graduating from QMUL, I knew I needed to have some practical experiences at the beginning of building my career. I had been looking for internships in London since I was entitled to hold a Graduate Visa for 2 years. I heard about the IBA London Office after I did some research in the job market. Since the Office has a human rights branch, I decided to apply for the internship.

The internship consists of providing assistance for the Programme Lawyers in the Human Rights department. Each Programme Lawyer works on different themes and projects. So far, I have had the chance to assist almost every one of them which helped me gain practical research skills in different aspects of Human Rights law. In providing assistance, I mostly do research on the latest developments in recent Human Rights issues such as trials in absentia, death penalty monitoring, gender apartheid, rule of law, immunities and international criminal tribunals, torture and crimes against humanity in Ukraine.

Besides doing research work, I attend events on the relevant subject topics on behalf of the IBAHRI -International Bar Association Human Rights Office. After each research or attendance at a conference talk, I prepare a briefing summarising my findings with relevant references. Also, I provide assistance in organisational events like the meetings or talks held in the Parliament, also I arranged visits to law firms and Law Society. Lastly, as part of my internship, I will be writing an article on the topic of my own choice to be published in the IBA Interns Newsletter.

Lastly, I would advise any students and alumni applying for jobs to research and get to know the institution and the work that they do well before applying and if selected to interview, to be honest and confident with your knowledge rather than trying just to impress the interviewer.”
