On 28th November, Queen Mary, University of London held its inaugural Founders Day which celebrated Queen Mary’s rich cultural heritage from its four founding institutions, Queen Mary College, Westfield College, St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College and The London Hospital Medical College.

To celebrate Founders’ Day, Queen Mary welcomed back alumni to celebrate former students Dame Cally Palmer and Dr Ashitey Trebi-Ollennu who were awarded honorary degrees for their exceptional contribution to society and their field of work. Dame Cally Palmer is a Chief Executive of The Royal Marsden and National Cancer Director for NHS England, responsible for the National strategy in improving survival and quality of life for all those affected by cancer, graduated from Queen Mary with a BA History in 1979. Dr Ashitey Trebi-Ollennu, is a Principal Robotics Engineer, Deputy Chief Engineer and Assistant Division Manager at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory, graduated from Queen Mary in 1991 with a BEng in Avionics.

Guests in attendance included current students and alumni from the various schools at Queen Mary, University of London.

CCLS Alumni and Development Officer, Rachel Owusu-Dome commented: “It was lovely to meet alumni from the various schools and hear them fondly reminiscing on their time at Queen Mary and discuss their career journeys since leaving. I was also able to meet CCLS Alumni in person which was nice as one alumnus from the CCLS Class of 1998 mentioned they had specifically travelled from Milan to attend Founders’ Day and reunite with fellow CCLS Alumni friends and see the excellent achievements of Dame Cally Palmer and Dr Ashitey Trebi-Ollennu acknowledged.”

The Founders’ Day ended with a lovely reception at Blizzard Mews where Queen Mary Alumni were able to catch up and network.
