CCLS Alumnus wins election to become a Vice President of the Sindh High Court Bar Association.
Zubair Ahmed Abro (Environmental Law LLM, 2012) was recently elected as Vice President of the Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) for the year 2023-24. SHCBA is one of the largest High Court Bar Association in Pakistan that had played major role in movements for restoration of democracy in Pakistan. Abro secured around 1,600 votes out of 3,000 votes.
Abro is a lawyer based in Karachi with more than 15 years of experience in litigation. His areas of expertise are civil property litigation and environmental law including the Environmental Impact Assessment, environmental compliances, and environmental licence regime. After returning to Pakistan in 2013 having completed his studies at CCLS, he contributed to drafting the Sindh Environmental Protection Act of 2014 This was the first provincial environmental law enacted after the 18th amendment in the Constitution of Pakistan through which subject of environment was devolved to provinces from the federal government.
Abro actively contributes in Public Interest Environmental Litigation (PIEL). He was part of the team that filed Constitution Petition on supply of clean water and sanitation facilities in Sindh in the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He is representing indigenous peoples of Tharparkar district in Supreme Court of Pakistan in a Constitution Petition challenging construction of effluent disposal site by Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC), as well as civil society and concerns of the citizens of Karachi challenging commercialization of public beach.
Abro’s research interests include Transboundary Water Management, R2P in disasters, Disaster Risk Reduction, Sustainable Development, and Environmental Law. He had the honour to review manuscripts on topics of his research interests for number of peer reviewed international journals.
International Bar Association and ELSEVIER publications have published his research on Indus Water Treaty between India and Pakistan, and state of Disaster Management in Pakistan.
