Thaís was shortlisted as a Rising Star in Arbitration at the Women in Business Law Awards Americas 2023 for the second consecutive year.
Thaís Fernandes Chebatt (Comparative and International Dispute Resolution LLM, 2017) currently works as a Senior Associate at Pinheiro Neto Advogados, São Paulo, Brazil. She had some relevant recognitions in relation to her practice in Construction Law and disputes over the recent years. In 2022, she was the sole winner for Construction in Brazil by Client Choice Awards 2022 (by Lexology) and as a Construction Global Future Leader by Who’s Who Legal. In 2021, 2022 and 2023 she was recognized as a Rising Star in Projects and Infrastructure by The Legal 500. And, more recently, she has been shortlisted as a Rising Star in Arbitration at the Women in Business Law Awards Americas 2023 for the second consecutive year.
Thaís started her career in 2005, when she joined as a trainee at one of the biggest law firms in Brazil, Pinheiro Neto Advogados,. At that time, she was in the end of the second year of her BBachelor's Degree in Law at Pontifícia Universidade Católica in São Paulo. Since the beginning, she focused her practice in Construction Law (contentious and non-contentious) and developed her experience in advising clients from the initial phase of feasibility analysis of the project, selection of the appropriate contractual model, drafting and negotiating contracts, as well as in the preparation of claims and resolving disputes, including litigation and arbitration (domestic and international) and other Dispute Resolution Alternative Methods.
In 2016/2017, she was already a senior associate at the firm when she undertaken LLM in Comparative and International Dispute Resolution from Queen Mary University of London. In this period, she had the opportunity to enhance her knowledge and to be in contact with renowned and experienced Professors in arbitration and construction. She had also the opportunity to connect with professionals from all over the world. The LLM was followed by a secondment at Macfarlanes LLP in London from 2017/2018. After that, she went back to her law firm in Brazil and continued to work in Construction Projects and disputes.
One piece of advice to other students from Queen Mary Thaís would give is to make the most of your experience during your studies at CCLS because time flies and everything finishes so fast. Queen Mary is an amazing University with very experienced and knowledgeable Professors so make the most of it, prepare for the lectures, participate in the events, use the libraries, connect with people and exchange experiences with other students.
