Nikhil Naren (Technology, Media and Telecommunications law LL.M., 2022) is working on the intersection of law, technology, and society. He is an Assistant Law Professor at the Jindal Global Law School, Sonipat, India and an Of Counsel at Scriboard [Advocates and Legal Consultants], New Delhi. The first edition of this book was released while Nikhil was pursuing his LL.M. in London as one of the youngest awardees of the prestigious Chevening Scholarship from India in 2021-22.

He has co-authored the book with leading technology and intellectual property (IP) lawyer Rodney D. Ryder (Scriboard, [Advocates & Legal Consultants], Founding Partner). Nikhil is considered one of the prominent emerging voices in the domain of Intellectual Property, brand management, and technology law in India.

According to the authors, the update to the book is critical to cover the advancements and the legal challenges that AI as a technology has witnessed in the past couple of years.  The key additions include- aspects of the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act, the interplay of artificial intelligence and intellectual property laws, the advancements in generative AI, the effect of India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act on the AI ecosystem, regulatory challenges, etc.

The Foreword to the book has been penned by Binoj Koshy, Former Director (Technology) at UIDAI, and the Prologue is written by Dr. I. Stephanie Boyce, Former President of the Law Society of England and Wales.

Testimonials from illustrious and distinguished individuals add to the book’s credibility and value. K.J. Alphons, Former Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha); Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa; Amish Tripathi, Bestselling Author and Former Diplomat; Robert Grosvenor, Managing Director (Privacy and Data Compliance) at Alvarez and Marsal; Jacob Turner, Author of ‘Robot Rules’; and Carl Gahnberg, Ph.D. (International Relations), IHEID, Geneva have praised the book.

Rodney  D. Ryder focuses on the fact that the text is a seminal work – one of the first on the subject. “We are delighted with the progress made in the Second Edition. We feel that the book will be a worthwhile study for anyone interested in artificial intelligence and digital progress in our world”, he adds.

Speaking on the growing discussions around artificial intelligence and IP, Nikhil says, “We must ascertain the legal standing of the works created by generative AI. The core issues not only concern the output but also the violation of intellectual property during the training phase. The book's third chapter is dedicated to the intellectual property issues arising out of the deployment [and use] of AI.” He adds, “I am sure this book will be a foundational guide for anyone starting to learn about AI.”

Manish Arora, a Harvard Alumni and Partner at Law & Justice Publishing, says- “Rodney is an authority and a go-to name in the domain of technology and intellectual property laws, and Nikhil is a young achiever and a doer, who is extremely passionate and has already begun making a mark in the field with his wealth of ideas in the domain of technology law. After receiving a stellar response to the first edition, and with things changing so quickly, I think the book's second edition has arrived right on time.”

Rodney and Nikhil’s first book together- Internet Law: Regulating Cyberspace and Emerging Technologies, was published in 2020 by Bloomsbury Professional.

Copies of the books are available at leading bookstores in India and e-commerce websites such as Amazon and Flipkart. The authors can be reached at rodney@scriboard.com and nikhil.naren@jgu.edu.in, respectively.
