Mohnish Sharma talks about extra curriculum activities, volunteering and events he took part in while studying at CCLS.
As we start the new academic year at CCLS and welcome our next cohort of students, we are pleased to share some events and volunteering roles our alumnus Mohnish Sharma (Commercial and Corporate Law LLM, 2024) took part in at CCLS, QMUL and London-wide whilst studying during the 2023/24 academic year.
CCLS organises a varied programme of events and conferences ( CCLS events - Centre for Commercial Law Studies (qmul.ac.uk) open to our students. Mohnish attended one such event, The Politics of Decarbonisation ( Items - Centre for Commercial Law Studies (qmul.ac.uk) on 11th July. “I found the event to be very pertinent as I have a deep interest in environmental law and I am very concerned about the rising levels of temperatures as well as global warming. I am an avid and active follower of the environmental issues and latest news and technological developments that are being carried out to tackle these problems. At this event I got the opportunity to speak to some of the attendees; during the discussions we all agreed unanimously that collective action and concrete solutions is needed from each nation for tackling climate change and global warming. Furthermore, I am part of the Sustainability Team of the Queen Mary Students Union as a volunteer. The primary objective of the team is to promote awareness amongst students about the urgent need to conserve the environment and wildlife as well as to use the natural resources in a diligent manner.
Mohnish also got a chance to take part in some London-wide events: “I got an opportunity to participate in London Legal Walk 2024 as a Volunteer Route Marshal on behalf of London Legal Support Trust (LLST) (About us - London Legal Support Trust - LLST). This event was held on 18th of June and our primary duty was to cheer and encourage the walkers as well as to help them in finding the correct route of the Legal Walk. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience, as I got to interact with people of different nationalities and experienced the true cosmopolitan culture of London.
During my time studying at CCLS I was also selected to act as a Campus Ambassador for Legal Cheek from July 2024 to June 2025. I got the first opportunity to work for the Legal Cheek on 11th September 2024 at the National Law fair which was held at The University of Law Campus at London Moorgate. More than 60 law firms as well as government organisations, like the Crown Prosecution Service and The Government Legal Department, participated in the fair through their representatives.
My primary responsibility was to raise commercial awareness amongst the students and graduates about the different career opportunities and growth avenues available for them in the UK legal sector. I enjoyed the fair very much as I got an invaluable opportunity to interact with students from different European nations and to know about their views and career aspirations.
I also volunteered for a few shifts as a Welcome Crew member for Queen Mary Students Union during the moving-in weekend on 14th -15th September 2024 to help the incoming students in locating their accommodation in the different halls of residence in the Mile End campus. As a Welcome Crew member, I also volunteered during the QMUL Welcome Fair on 19th - 20th September 2024. I thoroughly enjoyed my role as I could be able to help the new incoming students and got an invaluable opportunity to give back to the students community at the Queen Mary University of London.
On a closing note, I would like to thank all my CCLS professors, in-sessional module lecturers, dissertation supervisors, careers and enterprises team members as well other staff members of the CCLS for their invaluable support and guidance. In future, I am planning to stay and settle down in London or in a city nearby. I look forward to remaining in regular touch with the CCLS and participating in events as well volunteer and contribute towards various activities.”
