Joshua studied International Shipping Law LLM and now he works as a Shipbroker at Vortex Shipbroking Ltd in Westminster/St.James.
I chose to study at CCLS for a number of reasons. Firstly, I was attracted by the reputation of QMUL. Secondly, of the universities that offered LLM programmes in Shipping Law, Queen Mary was by far the premier choice in London. Lastly, the location of CCLS in Holborn within a stone's throw of barristers' chambers' was a big pull for me.
My favourite memory of CCLS would be the day of my first lecture. Realising that for an entire year I would be travelling into central London every week to Gray's Inn to study Shipping Law brought a wave of excitement and energy. Sometimes acknowledging your surroundings can offer extra motivation and give you that additional belief in yourself that your dreams are one step closer.
Being a member of the CCLS alumni has expanded my network. I now have close friends in the legal shipping industry in multiple countries. Shipping is a very small world. To have these friendly connections is an advantage that will benefit me greatly later in my career. I thank CCLS for this.
Studying my LLM at CCLS is the fundamental reason I am where I am today. Through my professor (Miriam Goldby) and the very nature of my course (Shipping Law), I found the career path I am in today (Shipbroking). Before the LLM and CCLS I had no idea the profession of Shipbroking even existed.
Prospective students should study at CCLS for a multitude of reasons. The location in the centre of one of the legal hubs in the world is an obvious factor. Further, the nature of CCLS, being a specialist post-graduate centre allows students to focus on why they are there. The distractions are minimal unlike being on a main university campus. The reputation and quality of teaching is of course another central reason for choosing CCLS. Lastly, the ability to attract retired judges and senior legal professionals to the classroom is an undeniable attraction for ambitious students.
