Tim studied an LLM on which he selected a mix of Commercial Law courses such as Internet Law, Electronic Banking Law, European Competition Law, International Trade Law, and the course that finally made his career - International Commercial Arbitration.
I decided to study an LLM in the year 2000. Back then, ‘the internet’ was quite a new thing for common use. The world was very enthusiastic about it – and so was I. Clearly, CCLS offered the most interesting courses about Internet Law, IT Law, and so on; today we would probably call it ‘Tech Law’. Queen Mary University with CCLS seemed to have its finger on the pulse at the time and was definitely the place to go for me.
The people and the community we felt. At the end of the year, we did not want to go home "just like that". So two friends and I started an initiative to found an alumni organisation for the School of International Arbitration, to stay connected. It is great to see what the School and its fantastic students have meanwhile made of that little project.
Great memories from the past and important relations for now and the future. And certainly the highest number of friends I ever made at a place where I studied.
When I started with the arbitration class, I had absolutely no idea what the topic was about. It was that quirky moment of confusion that sometimes happens at the commencement of studies where somebody runs somewhere and you just follow to give it a try. One year down the road, owing to the inspiring teaching by Prof. Julian Lew and Prof. Loukas Mistelis, I knew what I wanted to do in my professional life. And I had a profile that appealed to the big firms.
Still today, nineteen years after my LLM exams, when I meet students and trainees who are planning their career, I recommend they consider studies at CCLS. For example, The London School of International Arbitration went from strength to strength and offers a perfect mix of courses for a Litigation & Dispute Resolution practitioner. CCLS has always been lucky in finding excellent teachers that are also excellent practitioners, and in appealing to an international crowd of students you can hardly meet elsewhere. All that in an exciting city like London.
