The third event in the Art, Business and Law Artists Talks Series was an evening conversation between curator Lucia Pietroiusti and writer Mary Rinebold, with an introduction from Dr Debbie De Girolamo.

The Art Business and Law LLM at Queen Mary University of London was honoured to welcome Lucia Pietroiusti to the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS). Pietroiusti is Head of Ecologies at the Serpentine in London. As a curator and visionary, she is at the forefront of creating space for artists to think and move at the intersection of art, ecology and systems, often outside of the exhibition space.

Pietroiusti’s curatorial practice encompasses collaborating with artists whose work often takes place outside the exhibition space and whose subjects extend into the post-anthropocentric, including a wide set of species and beings in the realm of more-than-human. The conversation will consider where the art world stands today in relation to climate justice, and how artists and art workers can contribute to new modes of imagining a more sustainable present and future. Particular attention will be given to the ways art law can support the convergence of art and ecology from both speculative and logistical perspectives.

In 2018 Lucia Pietroiusti founded General Ecology at the Serpentine, one of the first departments in an art institution devoted to researching the environment and ecology. From 2020 to 2022 Pietroiusti co-curated Back to Earth, the Serpentine’s long-term, interdisciplinary programme addressing the ongoing climate emergency, which has led to the highly anticipated Infinite Ecologies Marathon, including the Prelude that took place in October 2023, and culminating with the Festival in July 2023, both at the Serpentine. She also co-founded and continues to co-curate the Serpentine Podcast (with Eva Jäger, Ben Vickers and Kay Watson),

Parallel to Pietroiusti’s work at the Serpentine, Pietroiusti curated the opera-performance Sun & Sea (Marina), by Rugile Barzdziukaite, Vaiva Grainyte and Lina Lapelyte for the Lithuanian Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale, which won the Golden Lion that year and was followed by an internationally acclaimed tour (2020-2025). Pietroiusti also co-curated the 2022 Biennale Gerdeïna 8: Personen Persons (with Filipa Ramos); co-curated the 13th Shanghai Biennale entitled Bodies of Water (with Andrés Jaque, Marina Otero Verzier, Filipa Ramos, YOU Mi,) 2020/21; curated Being Mothers for POWER NIGHTS at E-Werk Luckenwalde, 2021. Pietroiusti will co-curate Songs for the Changing Seasons at the 2024 Vienna Climate Biennale (with Filipa Ramos). Pietroiusti publications include Sun & Sea (Marina,) 2019; PLANTSEX as part of MAL Journal, 2019; Microhabitable (with Fernando García-Dory,) 2020; More-than-Human (with Andrés Jaque and Marina Otero Verzier,) 2020; and upcoming in 2024 the reader The Shape of a Circle in the Mind of a Fish the record and extension of the recent, same-titled festival, podcast and research project at the Serpentine which interrogated theories of mind in more-than-human species and beings. Pietroiusti leads a module for the Interior Architecture MA at the HEAD in Geneva entitled Interior Ecologies, 2023/24, and is a Trustee of the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC).

Writer Mary Rinebold is curator of the Artists Talks series. She is a consultant at Canvas Art Law, a specialist International Art and Cultural Property Firm (www.canvasartlaw.co.uk), and runs a creative practice (www.lucylovelace.com) in writing, curating, and art bookmaking, having contributed art criticism to magazines including Artforum, Artforum.com, Flash Art, and Art in America, and fictive essays for artists' exhibitions and monographs.
