  • Applied Python programming for legal analytics
  • Understanding and implementing the algorithmic logic behind cutting-edge legaltech solutions
  • Structuring and interpreting legal knowledge as scalable, analyzable data

Participants will not only learn to code but also receive hands-on training in effectively integrating Large Language Models (e.g. ChatGPT) into their coding processes. They will then collaborate in teams on a practical final assessment, addressing a complex legal research question by acquiring, cleansing, and analyzing a substantial dataset to produce meaningful, data-driven legal insights.

Delivery Format

All participants are required to bring their own laptop.

Please note the course has limited spaces available due to the hands-on nature and interactivity of the teaching format.

A certificate of completion will be provided to participants upon conclusion of the course.

Course Leaders

Damien Charlotin operates at the intersection of data, law, and technology. His 2020 Cambridge doctoral thesis explored the foundations of authority in international dispute settlement, leveraging a dataset of over a million citations from rulings and pleadings to examine what makes an authority "authoritative." Currently, Damien is a Research Fellow at HEC Paris, where he focuses on digital regulation and leads a groundbreaking project to fine-tune large-scale language models using French legal data.

He teaches Legal Data Analysis at HEC Paris and Sciences Po Paris, introducing law students to Python and computational methods for analyzing legal texts as data. He further teaches about the application of Artificial Intelligence, and in particular Large Language Models, to legal contexts. Damien also contributes to HEC’s flagship Executive MBA program as a data mentor and frequently designs executive education programs for businesses, governments, and individuals. He mentors startups at Station F in Paris, particularly those incubated with HEC.

Parallel to academia, Damien has spent the past eight years as Senior Editor and Data Editor for Investment Arbitration Reporter, a leading publication in investment and commercial arbitration, where he spearheaded the development of its data-driven offerings. He also practices public international law, advising states and international organizations in disputes and as a consultant.
