Mohammad Hazrati, a third-year PhD researcher at the Energy and Natural Resources Law Institute at CCLS, was one of the keynote speakers at a roundtable discussion at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), in Kuala Lumpur.
His keynote speech ‘Iranian Energy Industry: Opportunities and Challenges,’ covered the evolution of the Iranian energy industry, the current legal and policy framework governing the industry, and the main challenges and opportunities the industry is facing. A large part of the speech was devoted to the US re-imposition sanctions on the Iranian oil and gas industry, exploring how these sanctions are negatively impacting the Iranian energy industry both in terms of fossil fuels, and renewable energy industries. Dr Wan Zulhafiz, a lecturer and legal advisor at IIUM University, also spoke at the event addressing the Malaysian energy industry and some of the main challenges that it faced.
Mohammad’s PhD thesis is about ‘Sustainable Use of Oil and Gas Resources: A Comparative Study of Iran, Canada and Malaysia.’ His research intends to make recommendations regarding the sustainable use of Iran’s oil and gas resources. As a part of his PhD, after being awarded a Postgraduate Research Fund, Mohammad went to Malaysia, becoming a visiting scholar at IIUM University to do his fieldwork in Malaysia.
