Mishcon de Reya has announced the first beneficiary of ‘The Mishcon de Reya Scholarship’, in association with the School of Law at Queen Mary University of London.
The scholarship, which sponsors a place on Queen Mary’s LLM programme, has been awarded to Brazilian lawyer Orlando José Guterres Costa Junior.
Orlando studied law at his local state, the Federal University of Maranhão, before receiving his Masters from Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) on their International Law programme. He received scholarships for both degrees and was one of the editors (Ad Hoc Consultant and Peer Review Board) of UERJ’s Law School Journal of Law and of UERJ’s Law School ‘Panorama of Brazilian Law’ Journal.
Orlando has worked alongside some of Brazil’s top arbitrators, and he is currently Vice President of the Brazilian Centre for Mediation and Arbitration’s Young Arbitrators Committee in which he organized seminars and courses with practitioners and scholars from different regions of Brazil to foster the practice and study of arbitration across the country. Orlando intends to build an international career and has keen interest in International Commercial Arbitration, Commercial Law, International Law, Investment Law and Transnational Law.
Orlando was selected by Gary Miller and Angelos Dimopoulos based on his excellent academic background, relevant work experience that ‘illustrates a committed young lawyer’ and previous experience that ‘illustrates how he has managed so far to excel academically by relying on scholarships, and how this scholarship will be a stepping stone in furthering his education and career potentials.’
Orlando says, ‘Studying at Queen Mary would not be possible without this scholarship, and I am grateful for this opportunity. I believe Brazil has the potential to become an international disputes resolution hub in Latin America, due to its strong economic relationships with neighbouring countries, and will use the knowledge gained form this programme to help foster the study of international law by Brazilian attorneys.’
