qLegal releases Annual Report 2020-21

The qLegal team is delighted to have released their Annual Report for 2020-21. The year was marked by significant growth and successes, both in the unprecedented number of students joining qLegal programmes and as an organisation consolidating our offerings and partnerships.

Our theme for this year’s report is connection, building connection and growing alongside each other, online and in person.

Professor Ian Walden, Director of the Centre for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary University of London, noted "The pandemic meant we had to be more creative in the way we connected with each other. [...] Working across locations and time zones, life was largely spent in front of screens, but we were keen not to lose the human side. The stats and stories in this report give a flavour of how this went."

The report is the occasion to highlight qLegal’s place in the legal support ecosystem for startups [PDF 79KB] as well as celebrate qLegal’s achievements. This includes offering:

  • 239 student opportunities, up 66% from the previous year
  • 165 volunteering opportunities offered in 2020-21
  • New multidisciplinary SKETCH project
  • Collective Great qLegal Cookbook made by staff and students
  • 66 advice letters sent to clients
  • 17 workshops to start-ups and entrepreneurs
  • 31 start-ups in-house support
  • 5 clients tailored consultancy service

Since its inception, qLegal has focused on students connecting with each other as a key part of the practical learning experiences offered to them. Our alumna, Kamila Gomolka (2019-20 Future Clients Programme) noted: “qLegal taught me how to maintain effective and long-lasting relationships”. Emmanuel Tukwasibwe (2020-21 Entrepreneurship Law Clinic Module student), told us “Socially engaging with the qLegal team every Friday in the middle of a global pandemic was refreshing. I'm very glad I got to participate and meet everyone."

qLegal work wouldn't be possible without the support of all individual volunteers involved who have made such a difference, and the Annual Report thanks in particular qLegal Partners and Advisory Board for their long lasting support.
