On 6 May 2022, the Queen Mary team composed of LLM students Avi Bhandari, Abhinav Kumar, and Juan Alberto Pulido Lock, attained the first place in the Legal Challenge V.
The Queen Mary team ‘Pisco and Curries’ was also awarded for the best respondent memoranda. Team member Juan Alberto Pulido Lock also won the award for the best oralist.
The Legal Challenge is an annual moot court competition organised by the Game Industry Law Summit (GILS). The GILS is a community event for the leading legal and business professionals who work in the international games industry.
This moot competition is fully dedicated to the legal matters of the video games industry. The teams competed on a fictitious case which focused on the emerging issues within the context of video game development, copyright, trademarks and NFTs. The case also navigated murky contractual arrangements and disputes over intangible ownership. The panel of judges consisted of international renowned lawyers working in the industry and comprised of 18 teams with participants from more than 14 countries.
On the judges’ bench for the final round of the competition were Anna Kobylańska, presiding, and Sean F. Kane, Ryan Black, Ewald Konstantin, and Karin Pagnanelli. In the final round of the competition, the Queen Mary team faced Team Elexir from France, and the event was streamed live on Youtube.
The Queen Mary team members will travel to Vilnius for the award ceremony which take place as part of the GILS main event, which will take place from 7–9 September 2022.
