The International Chamber of Commerce UK’s Centre for Digital Trade and Innovation (C4DTI) Awards Ceremony takes place alongside the Centre’s Annual Digital Trade Conference to bring together industry and government practitioners and recognise excellence on both a corporate and individual level among those involved in delivering a cheaper, faster and simpler trading system.
Dr Miriam Goldby, Professor of Shipping, Insurance and Commercial Law at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University of London, is recognised as a leading expert in the digitalisation of trade. Her work in this area dates back to September 2003, when she started researching her PhD thesis entitled The Electronic Replication of the Bill of Lading’s Functions: Past Failures, Current Trends, Future Developments. Professor Goldby published a monograph on this subject entitled “Electronic Documents in Maritime Trade: Law and Practice” with Oxford University Press in 2013, a second edition of which was published in 2019, as well as numerous research papers.
She participated in the deliberations of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) Working Group IV which led to the adoption of the UNCITRAL Model Law on Electronic Transferable Records in 2017. The Model has been endorsed by several nations, and the G7 nations have committed to adopting legislation that aligns with it.
She joined the Law Commission of England and Wales on a part-time secondment between November 2020 and March 2022 to work on the Commission’s Electronic Trade Documents Project. This resulted in the enactment by the UK Parliament of the Electronic Trade Documents Act 2023 which came into force in September 2023.
