London-wide ULEZ six month report shows emission reductions are improving air quality

London-wide ULEZ six month report shows reductions in traffic-related air pollution across central, inner and outer London.

In July, the Mayor of London released a six month report of the impacts of the London-wide ULEZ expansion from August 2023. The initial findings show tail-pipe emissions have reduced across all of London compared to modelled air quality without the ULEZ.

Since the expansion, the estimated nitrogen oxides (NOX) emissions from cars and vans in outer London are 13% lower and 7% lower. Similarly, estimated PM2.5 emissions from cars and vans in outer London are 20% lower than predicted if the ULEZ was not extended to outer London.

Other key findings show that, on average, roadside NO2 concentrations have reduced by 62% in central London, 47% in inner London, and 41% in outer London from 2017-2023, as highlighted in the map above.
